Iconic Unimpressed Chloe Clem Meme To Be Sold As NFT To Fund Her College Education
Remember this girl? Gen Z memers from all over the world spent the early 2010’s retweeting and upvoting this reaction picture of a toddler giving us a sassy side eye from her car seat.
The then 2-year-old girl in the iconic picture is none other than Chloe Clem, and the picture is actually a timely screenshot from a video filmed by her mother Katie, surprising her kids with a Disneyland trip in 2013.
Needless to say, Chloe did not react as expected.
Coming back to the present, the infamous meme will now be sold by Katie for thousands of dollars as a non-fungible token (NFT).
The term “non-fungible” basically means that it’s unique and irreplaceable, much like a one-of-a-kind trading card, and I’d say Chloe’s facial reactions to her sister’s emotional outburst to ditching school is pretty irreplaceable.
The video, posted on 12 September 2013, has since collected over 20 million views. Katie responded to this unexpected attention and said, “I opened up Tumblr and there were just pages and pages of Chloe’s face.”
“It was very weird, very overwhelming. I had my family, friends sending me these memes – till this day they still send me the memes of Chloe they see on the internet.”
The Utah family has decided to auction off the image as an NFT with bids starting at 5 Ethereum – a form of cryptocurrency worth roughly US$15,000 (RM62,820).
Most NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency (ETH), but its blockchain also supports NFTs, which store extra information that makes them work differently from an ETH coin.
Katie mentioned that selling the meme was a “no brainer” and hopes to use the money made from the sale to fund her daughters’ education.
Though, Chloe has other plans for the money. “I’d like to buy a horse, I’d like to build a Walt Disney World,” says Katie on behalf of her daughter.
The internet sensation is now 10 years old and has over 530k followers on instagram. She remains to be one of the most popular faces when reminiscing the good ol’ days of 9gag and prehistoric meme formats.
“It’s a cool opportunity, especially if there’s a Chloe fan out there who loves this meme they’ll be able to own it. Even Chloe has said ‘that’s pretty cool’ – it’s a typical 10-year-old thing to say.”
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at some of Chloe’s memes that netizens have created over the years:
