This Futuristic Powersuit Is Real & You Can Finally Get Your Own One in Malaysia

Just when you thought the future couldn’t get here any sooner, along comes a futuristic, cyberpunk-esque power suit from Shanghai-based robotics startup Hypershell, which has just made its official Malaysian debut.

Designed to make activities like walking, hiking, and running feel more like gliding through a sci-fi action scene, the Hypershell Go X, X Pro, and Carbon X exoskeletons might just be the most future-forward pieces of gear to hit the market since GPS-enabled watches.

A mech suit for the masses

If you’re having trouble picturing the uses of an exoskeleton, just imagine it functions like a wearable robot. That’s ’cause it isn’t just an assortment of metal strapped to your legs to help give them more structure and strength. The X Series exoskeletons by Hypershell are robotised, using smart engineering and AI to help you reduce physical strain during certain activities.

When it comes to actual real-world use, the Hypershell X Series exoskeletons can boost leg strength by up to 40% and reduce physical strain by up to 30%. But the tech geek in me is more excited about how it looks. I can’t be the only one that’s thinking of the mech suits in Edge of Tomorrow.

Unlike the props in the movie, however, these exoskeletons aren’t clunky and slow-moving. Powered by Direct Drive Technology, the suits deliver up to 800W of assistive power while staying rather lightweight (1.8kg to 2.4kg).

It features a 72Wh, 5,000 mAh battery pack that’s fast-charging, long-lasting, and removable. One full charge gets you 17.5 km of assisted motion, which is more than enough to make a trip up one of the more challenging trails in Bukit Kiara feel like a stroll through the park.

It features a lot more tech than you think

The Hypershell X Series exoskeletons feature an onboard MotionEngine algorithm, which adapts to your stride using AI. It basically predicts your movements—with just 0.03 seconds of latency (delay).

So instead of worrying about the suit going rogue (like any reasonably skeptical person would, I guess), it’ll know exactly where you want to go, even before you do. Plus, its motor system has 300º of torsional freedom and a one-size-fits-most approach. You won’t have to walk with an awkward gait.

You’re probably thinking it’s uncomfortable to wear for extended hours, and you might be half-right. There’s not much we can do about the humidity in Malaysia, but these exoskeletons do work their best in ensuring maximum comfort, with up to 10 layers of padding. It’s also got good breathability and weight distribution.

You’ll probably still be sweating, but at least you’ll be sweating in style. And while the device is IP54-rated and can survive temperatures as low as -20ºC, how it holds up in monsoon downpours or midday city heat remains to be seen.

Still, the arrival of such tech in Malaysia is something to be happy about. It definitely opens up real possibilities for outdoorsy people (or those who work outdoors), elder care, and even rehabilitation. Or if you’re like me, you’ll probably use it for post-workout recovery days when your legs just feel like jelly.

Even if you don’t see yourself using this exoskeleton, you have to admit it’s a pretty novel gadget.
