Hotel Equatorial Penang Will Close Its Doors and Cease Operations By 31 March
Like other businesses affected by the Covid-19, the five-star Equatorial Hotel Penang is taking a hit and will cease operations by 31 March 2021.
In an internal letter to employees, its senior vice president for projects and operations, Alang Ong said the closure of the hotel was a “sad and difficult decision”. He wrote that the last day of business is yet to be decided, but will be before March 31.
“Until we officially cease operations, all of you shall remain as employees of the hotel and we remain committed to upkeep the strong heritage and name of Hotel Equatorial Penang,” he said.
Despite suffering huge loses, Ong said the company will pay severance benefits to hotel employees with details to be announced later. “Please rest assured that the management shall strive to comply with all its obligations to you in accordance with your terms and conditions of employment,” he added.
If the closure of the Equatorial Hotel is confirmed, it will be among the 100 establishments in the hotel sector to be closed down since the Covid-19 pandemic began last year.
