Free Sh!t of the Week – Tribute Albums to Nirvana & The Strokes

Thirsty for JUICE content? Quench your cravings on our Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp

Hey kiddies, it’s Monday and that sucks unless you’re a sadist dog-catcher. So here are 2 awesome free albums to download courtesy of Spin and Stereogum. We hope you like tributes, The Strokes and Nirvana as much as we do!

SPIN Tribute Album ‘Newermind’

It’s almost music-journalist-hivemind serendipity. Just as JUICE‘s 90s month is over, the August issue of SPIN comes with a tribute album to the zeitgeist band of the 90s – Nirvana. The album contains 13 Nirvana songs as covered by Amanda Palmer, Butch Walker & The Black Widows, Midnight Juggernauts, Titus Andronicus, Surfer Blood, Foxy Shazam, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band, Telekinesis, Jeff the Brotherhood, Ema and even Kurt’s favourites The Vaseline and Meat Puppets.

We don’t mean to be a cliche but check out the latter’s interpretation of everyone’s favourite Nirvana anthem ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Yes, you’ve heard multiple versions of it already but this is the band that was covered by Nirvana themselves showing mutual respect by doing the same to their most well known song.

STROKED: A Tribute to ‘Is This It’?

On a much less 90s note, Stereogum releases the fourth iteration of their tribute series, this time honouring the 10th anniversary of what was perhaps the noughties’ equivalent of Nevermind — The Strokes’ Is This It? (in terms of cultural impact at least).

For a lot of teenagers of the early 00s, the album was their first exposure to the grimy punk scene in New York that was once inhabited by the likes of Richard Hell & the Voidoids. The Strokes hasn’t reached anywhere near the quality of Is This It? since, but that doesn’t negate the album’s classic status. The tribute features a variety of acts ranging from the soft indie pop sounds of Peter Bjorn & John to the psychedelic surf of Real Estate.
