Jo Koy has roasted his way through sold-out arenas, turned family trauma into Emmy-nominated punchlines, and singlehandedly made Asian mums a global comedic archetype. Now, he’s bringing that beautiful madness to Malaysia.

And no, he’s not just recycling old material.

JUICE locked in an exclusive interview with the Filipino-American comedy juggernaut ahead of his Kuala Lumpur stop on the Just Being Koy tour, which just so happens to double as a warm-up for his next Netflix special. So not only are we getting the jokes before the rest of the world, we’re basically the test audience for whatever chaotic brilliance he’s about to unleash!

What follows is Jo being Jo: Heartfelt, hilarious, and just a little bit unhinged. The way we like it:

So, Jo—how does Malaysia look from the stage?
“Laughter is a universal language,” he says, doing his best impression of someone who hasn’t been emotionally scarred by sambal yet.

“Funny is funny.” And when your entire act hinges on turning childhood trauma into a global bonding moment, it’s safe to say Southeast Asia’s about to be very seen.

Filipino mums vs Malaysian mums
When asked how our beloved Malaysian mothers stack up against his iconic Filipino mum, Jo wisely refuses to start a diplomatic incident.

“A mom is a mom,” he says, which is polite-speak for: they all come equipped with emotional manipulation tactics and weaponised footwear. The methods may vary, but the psychological damage is beautifully consistent.

Roasting with love, and just enough shame to make it sting
Jo’s never been the kind of comic who punches down. His trick? Punching himself first.

“I just tell my truth,” he says. “I’m honest.” It’s why his sets feel like a roast, a group hug, and a vaguely traumatic family dinner all rolled into one. The secret is self-deprecation (served with a smile and maybe a few childhood flashbacks).

Representation, but make it painfully relatable
For a lot of Malaysians, growing up meant watching sitcoms about white suburban bliss while wondering why our own families sounded like a 24/7 shouting match. Jo gets it.

“I never saw myself on the screen,” he says. “So I gave my mum a voice through comedy.” It’s why his specials hit different. You’re not just watching stand-up, you’re seeing your own loud, dramatic relatives immortalised in HD.

Now, about the food… 
We asked what he’s excited to eat in Malaysia. Jo played it safe: “Everything and anything.”

Which either means he’s being polite (slim chance) or no one’s told him what sambal belacan is yet.

To aspiring Malaysian comics: Cry onstage, not online
Our local comedy scene’s gaining steam, and Jo’s advice is refreshingly blunt:

“Just get up on-stage and do it.” No excuses. Bomb a few times. Survive the cringe. Then get addicted and do it all over again. It’s therapy, but louder and without the paperwork.

The joke that hit where it hurt
When asked if any bit was hard to tell, Jo doesn’t even flinch.

“Comedy is my therapy.” One of the toughest? Talking about his sisters getting kicked out of the house. “That was traumatic,” he says, like someone describing a papercut, not a full-blown childhood wound. But turning pain into punchlines is what he does best. Laugh, cry, heal. Repeat.

What Malaysians can expect from Just Being Koy
Jo’s workshopping his next Netflix special right here, which means Malaysians get to see the chaos before the global rollout.

“I’m really proud of this hour,” he says. Expect oversharing, emotional whiplash, and at least one story that makes you text your siblings, “Did mum really do that?”

So yeah, we’re way more than another city on his tour map.
