Physical classes have been out for almost a year now due to the pandemic, but if the whole virus dies down next year, the education ministry has announced that students could have the option to either wear black or white shoes to school.

Education Director-General, Datuk Dr Habibah Abdul Rahim, notes that this new decision is effective immediately. However, students must be responsible for colour coordinating their shoes and socks of the same colour.

“Black shoes will have to be paired with black socks and white shoes with white socks,” she said as reported in The Star.

Therefore, shoes that are going to be worn need to be made out of canvas or other breathable synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester, while taking into consideration comfort, safety and health.

This topic has been discussed before when former Education Minister, Dr Maszlee Malik had announced the black shoe ruling in 2018.

As of right now, the education ministry is concerned about parents who wish to provide for their children before the new school session starts. Thus, to make it easier, this ruling will allow students to choose the colour of their shoes. Since black is now allowed, it might lessen the need to repurchase white shoes.
