Following its award-winning debut in 2023, local musical—Dondang Dongeng—is making a return to the stage this year.

Its intimate retelling of beloved Malaysian folklore helped it clinch five awards at the 19th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards (BCAA) last year, including Best of 2023.

Nostalgic and fresh at the same time

The ethos of the musical revolves around one question: Do Malaysians, especially children, still know our folklore? In fact, it’s a question you could probably ask yourself now as an adult.

More than likely, you’ll only remember fragments of some of your favourite childhood tales. But thanks to Dondang Dongeng, you’ll be able to relive them through vibrant songs and melodies.

From classic tales like the clever and mischievous Sang Kancil, to the legends of beautiful local princesses, Malaysia’s cultural heritage is put on full display—keeping nostalgia alive with a modern twist.

One highlight you can look forward to is ‘Pekan’ by Mia Palencia, which bagged the Best Original Composition award at the BCAA.
