Dig of this Week: KAI

Kaiyisha Zawawi releases music under the mononym KAI, and her three-track self-titled EP recently debuted on SoundCloud. Being a student at The British & Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) in Brighton, KAI is therefore constantly making music. The EP took approximately seven months to come into fruition, with the help of two producers. Rough recordings were firstly recorded with her boyfriend William Riddell, the product of which were then placed in the hands of Felix Hopkins, whose work can be heard on the garage-y ‘Not Right Now’ and the languid ballad ‘I Knew It Was You’.

A fan of Bonobo, Jamie XX, Sasha Keable, James Blake, and Kaytranada, the singer has always had a taste for electronic music. Being in the UK, however, broadened not her palette for electronic music, rather, it introduced her to soul, alt r’n’b, and neo soul, all which can be heard in her lush vocal stylings.
