The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has debunked a viral image purporting to show Chinese characters installed alongside the iconic Ipoh sign on a hill near Jalan Kuala Kangsar.
In a statement yesterday, MBI said the image, which was shared in the Facebook group “Manjoi Manjoi Ajerr”, was believed to have been created using artificial intelligence or digital editing.
The council said the sign is currently being inspected, repaired, and restored after it was taken down on 15 July for a detailed assessment of its structural and physical condition.
The sign is expected to be reinstalled in stages from 4 to 6 August, depending on weather conditions and the progress of work at the site. MBI stressed that any images showing additional signage installed alongside the word “Ipoh” are false and do not reflect the actual situation.

It said the circulation of manipulated images and false claims could cause confusion, public anxiety, and misunderstanding, while also harming Ipoh’s image and reputation.
The council urged the public to verify information through MBI’s official channels instead of believing, commenting on, or sharing unverified content. It also reminded the public to follow the principle of “When in doubt, don’t share” to help prevent the spread of fake news.
MBI said it takes the misuse of AI and digital editing to create false content seriously, particularly where such material could fuel tension, hatred, or negative perceptions among the public.
The council added that it is currently examining the matter and may take appropriate action, including filing reports with the authorities against those involved in creating and distributing the fake content.
