Chinese beer brand ChongQing Beer has officially arrived in Malaysia through Carlsberg Malaysia, bringing with it a taste of Chongqing’s famously spicy food culture.
Originally brewed in Chongqing, China since 1958, the easy-drinking 3.8% ABV pale lager was created to pair perfectly with the city’s fiery mala cuisine, especially its iconic hotpot.
Known for its rich, oily broths and tongue-numbing spice, Chongqing cuisine has become a global favourite, with dishes like spicy noodles and hot-and-sour glass noodles drawing crowds worldwide.
Packaged in 490ml cans, the beer’s design pays tribute to its roots with a hotpot-inspired logo and a striking red-and-gold colour scheme, representing warmth, passion, and communal dining culture.

The launch also aligns with Malaysia’s growing appetite for authentic Chinese food and brands.
According to industry figures, Chinese-owned or co-owned restaurants in Malaysia have surged dramatically over the years, alongside the rise of major names like Haidilao, Tanyu, and Nong Geng Ji.
Stefano Clini, managing director of Carlsberg Malaysia, said Malaysian consumers are becoming increasingly interested in authentic Chinese brands, with food, culture, and lifestyle trends shaping new drinking habits.
Meanwhile, brewmaster Roger Li shared that bringing ChongQing beer to Malaysia carries personal significance, having started his brewing journey with the brand in its hometown of Chongqing. Now brewed locally in Shah Alam, the goal remains to preserve the beer’s original smooth and refreshing character.
ChongQing Beer will be available nationwide at 99 Speedmart outlets starting June 2026.
