Capt'n Trips & The Kid and Cactus Cactus partner up for joint INVASIVE

What a booming time for music this year with many upcoming international acts set to grace our Malaysian stage such as Coldplay, BABYMETAL and other favourites.

Despite the excitement for these performers, we can’t forget our local darlings, especially JUICE’s favourite psych-rock boys, Capt’n Trips & The Kid.

If you are not already aware, JUICE wrote a glowing review of the band’s latest project, Synthtech, which we touted as their genre-bending record that ventures into jazz and electrofunk without ignoring their signature psychedelic rock sound.

Now, the boys are expanding their horizons by joining their Singapore equivalent, Cactus Cactus, in a tour of Johor Bahru, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Malacca.

The tour, Invasive Species, will run from 27 May to 4 June 2023 with special guests like Kyoto Protocol and Terrer as well as other acts that have yet to be announced.

To heighten the excitement, here is a quick rundown of the performers that will be available for your entertainment soon!

Capt’n Trips & The Kid

For avid readers of JUICE and veteran gig-goers, Capt’n Trips & The Kid may not need an introduction, but just in case, this 6-piece rock band has been making waves due to their ravenous growl of psychedelic rock music that was inspired by their love for King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard and Tame Impala.

We’ve been fans for a while now, and we’ve even worked with the boys on our Home Jams segment, which you can watch below…

If you’re unfamiliar and would like a place to start when it comes to Capt’n Trips & The Kid, we highly suggest their album, Iteration 33.

Cactus Cactus

This trio hailing from Singapore serves up a delicious platter of experimental garage-rock which channels some of that energy we see from the aforementioned band with a dash of hip-hop adventurism akin to Kid Cudi.

Named one of the Top 5 Singaporean bands by Vans Musicians Wanted 2021, Cactus Cactus is a rising artist that has just released their long-awaited sophomore EP, Life is Short.

Integrating visceral punk rowdiness with an off-kilter musicality, this band will surely get you to lace-up your boots and mosh.

Kyoto Protocol

Are you a fan of the upbeat catchy tunes of The Killers, the lyricism of Death Cab for Cutie and the outright eccentrism of Tenacious D? Then Kyoto Protocol is a band you need to become familiar with.

Despite amassing a loyal fanbase in Malaysia, this band is also popular across the pond purely because nobody can deny such raucous energy.

Needing a place to start? We recommend their album, Catch These Men, especially the track, ‘KL I Love You’.

Terrer

It seems that there will be no shortage of punk energy during this tour as Terrer will also be gracing (or wrecking) the stage alongside our other riotous acts.

The band, which isn’t too fussed on what genre they might be (with that said, music is music), landed themselves on our radar when they released ‘Hang Loklaq’, which challenges the prevalent religious hypocrisy of conservative men of recent times.

The satirical and playful humour of the band will surely make for a fun time, so don’t forget to don your most comfortable outfits when you see them live because you will definitely want to dance.

Their EP, Kaum Lelaki, is a fantastic starting point if you wish to get to know them better.
