Just last month, fans of Green Day in Malaysia were either on the edge of joy or regurgitation with the announcement that Bunkface would open for the iconic punk band at the KL-leg of their Asian tour.

To refresh, Bunkface have been around for many years, but are most known for courting controversy with their anti-LGBT song ‘Akhir Zaman’ and cringe-worthy ‘Malaysia Madani’. (Our Writer attempted to write a review of ‘Akhir Zaman’ when it came out in 2020, and has not recovered since then.)

Many Green Day fans were quick to point out that frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is bisexual and openly advocates for LGBT rights, so the choice to have Bunkface perform on the same stage was indeed misplaced.

However, that didn’t stop Bunkface fans from cheering the decision, of course.

Today’s announcement from Live Nation (the concert’s organiser) sings a different tune though.

Citing “logistical, scheduling and production adjustments”, it was announced that Bunkface would not be the opening act for Green Day after all. Fans (of both Green Day and Bunkface) have been commenting that this wasn’t necessarily the reason, as the differences in ideologies between the two bands are worlds apart.

The announcement went on to emphasise that Green Day will be performing in Malaysia on 18 Feb at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil, as scheduled.

That leaves us with a question… if there’s another Malaysian band opening for Green Day, who should it be?

Maybe the answer to that question lies somewhere in our Music section!
