Audemars Piguet & John Mayer FINALLY Link Up for Stunning ‘Crystal Sky’ Royal Oak
If you’re a fan of the finer things in life (despite not being able to afford anything), you’re probably familiar with luxury Swiss watchmaker, Audemars Piguet. And if you’re a fan of Audemars Piguet, you’re definitely familiar with its longstanding friendship with seven-time Grammy Award-winning artist, John Mayer.
Mayer, who’s known to be an avid watch collector, hasn’t kept his love for Audemars Piguet quiet. Appearing several times on HODINKEE to talk about his ever-growing watch collection, pieces from the luxury watchmaker have made repeat appearances.
So, it only makes sense that the two come together to create a timepiece that’s as endearing as their friendship. That day has finally come, in the form of a limited edition Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar.
A stunning look for a stellar timepiece
The timepiece, which is equipped with AP’s self-winding Calibre 5134, is decked out in 18-carat white gold. The overall design brings together the Royal Oak’s aesthetic prowess with the sheer refinement in the perpetual calendar complication—a match made in Heaven.
Mayer, who worked closely with AP on the watch’s design, wanted to bring his vision of a ‘crystal sky’ to life. The timepiece’s dial faithfully reflects this, featuring an embossed motif composed of irregular shapes that resemble crystals. The crystals’ angles and facets add a lot of depth, detail, and complexity to the piece, made possible by a process called electroforming.
“My favourite watches have dials that you can stare endlessly at. A great watch dial feels like a picture window—you look into it, not at it. In the case of this QP (Perpetual Calendar), it’s like looking up at a moonless sky. There is a true sense of nature in it,” Mayer says.
“And when you couple that sense of depth and vastness with the complication of a perpetual calendar, it is a very powerful combination of technical prowess and aesthetic design.”
Other than its unique design, this Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar “John Mayer” Limited Edition is special for another reason. AP says it’s the last limited edition equipped with Calibre 5134, acting as a final tribute to the historic mechanism, whose history first began in 1978 with the Calibre 2120/2800.
Limited to just 200 pieces worldwide, you’re probably wondering how much this beauty costs
Well, if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it anyway.
But if, like this writer, you have unrealistic dreams and set depressingly unattainable goals for yourself, you’re gonna have to fork out a whopping US$180,700, which converts to roughly RM865,959—or nearly 15 top-trim Perodua Myvis. One can dream.
