Anthropic, the makers of the Claude family of AI tools, has urged global AI companies to simultaneously halt all development of their most powerful models, amid fears that these complex AIs could learn to improve themselves without any human control.

It’s not something you want to hear after all the initial fears of AI were initially put to rest when they first became mainstream.

Easier said than done, of course

Anthropic argues that a worldwide shutdown or temporary halt in advanced AI development would “likely be a good thing”. But this would only work if everyone halts development at the same time. If just one company stopped, they’d certainly be left behind.

“We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development to enable societal structures and alignment research to keep up with the advance of the technology,” Anthropic said.

But like all global agreements, it’s much easier said than done, especially when you consider AI companies in the US and China, who consider each other archrivals in this space. There’s an element of severe distrust, and it apparently outweighs the greater good.

Anthropic’s proposal has been met by a lot of pushback in the US, with the White House and Silicon Valley both arguing that a halt could risk giving China a strategic edge. But what exactly is the issue, really?

Cutting-edge AI is learning quickly… Too quickly

Recent data shows that AI is already speeding up the development of AI itself. This creates a kind of feedback loop that could eventually lead to a concept called “recursive self-improvement”, which basically means the AI has learned to teach itself to get smarter, without any human input or control.

Theoretically, when the AI reaches this stage, it could possibly determine (for itself) that humans aren’t a necessary part of the equation anymore. It could lead to a lot of things going very, very wrong for us humans. It’ll be a robot uprising, basically.

But Anthropic says that kind of threat isn’t something we need to worry about, for now.

“We are not there yet, and recursive self-improvement is not inevitable,” the company says. However, it could still arrive sooner than most governments expect, they warned.

“The evidence suggests that the human role is narrowing at each step in the AI development process.”
