M’sian Cartoonist Aie, Known For ‘Aku Hidup Dalam Blues’ Has Passed Away

Malaysian cartoonist Saari Sulong, or Aie, popularly known for his work on Aku Hidup Dalam Blues has passed away at age 48 at his home in Sungai Manggis, Banting, Selangor.

The sad news was shared by his friend and cartoonist, Ujang on his Facebook, who wrote that Aie died of liver complications around 4 am today.

According to the website JenamaX, Aie was born in Kuala Lumpur in February of 1973. He grew up in Segamat and Kluang, Johor before he finishing high school in Kuantan, Pahang.

Besides 1991’s Aku Hidup Dalam Blues, Aie was also known for the characters he created for Blues Untuk Aku and Aku Dan Sesuatu. He has produced two graphic novels, Permulaan Sebuah Akhiran and Dia Yang Dulu.

Before his passing, Aie was scheduled to publish three more works which were Cerita Dari Dalam, Saat Jiwa Berbicara and Dia Kembali. The graphic novels tell the stories of life as a teenager today.

For 25 years, Aie has held various positions including cartoonist, illustrator, comic painter, graphic designer, head of studio and art director for several publishing companies in the country.

Some of the magazines Aie had worked on are Jenakarama, Disney’s Mickey (Malay version), Ujang, Starz, Utopia, G3, Jom, Boboi and Gila-Gila.
