After JUICE: Post Decadence

Fondest memory of JUICE
Besides the amazing freebies and media junkets, I’d have to say meeting people like Missy Elliott, Ciara, John Legend, Wyclef Jean, Thecobrasnake, and Edison Chen were pretty sweet times.
Expectations & reality
Working with JUICE was beyond my expectations. Before I joined JUICE, they were the most fun people to know in the party circuit. I wanted to be like them so bad! I took this job without knowing what I was getting myself into, except that I will be going out a lot, but that was also the reason why I ditched my graphic design career away from the desk. I was definitely not ready for the large amount of ass-kissing I had to do, but hey, it had to be done. As pretentious as it sounds, that becomes the reality of how you make it in the scene. It’s definitely not as glamorous as you may think, but there were plenty of beautiful surprises that came with the job. I really can’t complain much because I have been a fan of JUICE for a long time and it was a dream come true. Hell, I had no idea I’d end up being an Editor for a magazine, but I have always loved the idea of magazines and I definitely came from that ‘magazines generation’. But c’mon! I get to write about music for a living?
Post JUICE
Have been exploring so many things since I left JUICE. Have been contributing to various publications, managing a few websites, and getting involved in events. Most important of all, spending time with my family and my nephew while I’m working from home. It’s a task, but it’s pretty worth it. I got a little boring and older.

So many! I’d learnt so much from my mentor aka my best boss ever, Muna Noor. She was so brave to take me in as a full-time writer when writing was just a hobby that I was toying with since college. I’m forever grateful that she gave me a chance to be a part of the JUICE team, which was a dream since I moved to KL in 2000. I definitely learnt the thought and creative process of making a magazine work, knowing that I can multi-task, realising I work better under pressure, the importance of deadlines, always have a plan B, take care of your team, giving others a benefit of a doubt and most of all, be nice.

Fondest memory of JUICE
The people I worked with. We shared a real camaraderie then and we’re still friends now. Sure the parties were epic (JUICE Anniversary parties! W00t!), but when you had a morning-after hangover and deadlines looming, being at the office didn’t seem so bad when you were working with those guys (and girls).
Expectations & reality
It’s hard for me to judge how far I’ve come after JUICE. I didn’t have a plan when I left in 2008 so I just let thing happen to me rather than actively work towards a goal. I’ve had some amazing experiences since then but it’s taken me this long to learn the value of purpose and will in life.
Post JUICE
Most recently, I was working with Kakiseni, a local arts advocacy organisation that promotes the performing arts in Malaysia. I think most would agree that preserving and promoting local art and culture are important yet there’s a real lack of support in terms of patronage and resources. Kakiseni has been working to change that by encouraging the Government and local businesses to invest more in local dance, music and theatre while trying to get more Malaysians to watch, enjoy and appreciate these kinds of performances.

The incredible amount of fun I had! Writing for JUICE was a blast because of the opportunities to explore new places and meet interesting people. At the same time, I learnt the importance of professional conduct and that it takes lots of practice, research and observation skills to improve as a writer.
JULIAN OH
Former Graphic Designer
Fondest memory of JUICE
Starting work and pretending I know how to use a Mac for a week (I had only used Windows prior) before giving up.
Expectations & reality
I expected to be working in a dungeon with slave drivers for editors, but in actual fact, April Kuan was super friendly and nice.
Post JUICE
I am a photographer and a tattooer/travelling tattooer…or technically, I am typing my reply now.

Never talk to an editor before lunch or till he/she has their morning coffee.
