More Than 50 Malaysians Unreachable After Nepal Flash Floods

Over 50 Malaysian travellers have been unreachable by family members following a devastating flash flood in Nepal on Wednesday, 27 August.

“We are still gathering information on the Malaysians who are unreachable. Family members have been unable to establish contact with more than 50 Malaysians,” said Mohd Firdaus Azman, chargé d’affaires of the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu.

According to Firdaus, flooding along the Bhote Koshi River has hindered road access in the affected region, prompting the Nepalese government to deploy helicopters for search-and-rescue operations.

At least 341 foreigners are among the missing, according to official figures. The bulk of which comprises at least 142 Indian nationals, who were in the country with three travel agencies: Samrat Tours & Travels, Leaf Holiday, and Himalayan Glacier.

Key infrastructure such as bridges and power projects have been swept away by the floods, which have also engulfed villages and completely cut off road access to them. Local media reports the destruction of 19 bridges and 40km of highway.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude-5.2 seismic event occurred near the border between Nepal and China at 8.37 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

“This event was initially reported as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. Additional analysis of nearby seismic stations, long-period seismic waves, and satellite imagery led to the determination that the seismic event was instead a glacial collapse and debris flow, and that no earthquake had occurred,” they said.

While there are different figures regarding Malaysians who are potentially affected by the floods, here’s a clearer breakdown of the numbers:
