MP: Mat Rempits Should Be Sent to National Service Boot Camp

If there’s one thing that’ll surely disturb your sleep in the middle of the night, it’s the roar and clank of modified motorcycle exhausts filling the air, courtesy of none other than your neighbourhood mat rempits.

Other than making you lose sleep, illegal racing (or simply reckless riding) has caused countless fatal road accidents in Malaysia, often times involving unlucky road users and even said mat rempits themselves. The government has tried several times to deal with this problem, to no avail.

But opposition MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN–Jerantut) has suggested offending mat rempits should be sent to a special National Service boot camp.

Fines aren’t enough, off to boot camp you go

The MP suggests the special programme could be conducted with involvement from military veterans and commandos, intentionally making it a more strict and rigorous “punishment” for mat rempits who disrespect the safety of other road users.

This would make an example of them to other would-be mat rempits, acting as a social deterrent. At least, that’s the general idea for such a proposal.

“Would the ministry consider working with the Defence Ministry to place mat rempit in a special PLKN course led by military veterans and commandos, combined with community service? Rather than relying solely on fines ranging from RM2,000 to RM10,000, such programmes could teach mat rempit and serve as a lesson to their peers,” he said.

More importantly, however, he also urged for legal action to be taken against workshops involved in illegally modifying motorcycles, citing them as the source of the problem.

“While enforcement is often directed at riders, the root of the problem lies with those carrying out the modifications,” he said.

“Since workshops fall under the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry’s jurisdiction rather than the Transport Ministry, new regulations may be required to enable action against them.”

There are mat rempits who still cause trouble even with stock motorcycles, so this move might not necessarily curb the issue altogether. But it’ll definitely help reduce the number of incidents.
