Humanoid Robot Shatters Half-Marathon World Record

A humanoid robot competing against other robots (and actual humans) has broken the men’s world record for fastest half-marathon.

The people behind this robot, Chinese smartphone maker Honor, packed the humanoid with an autonomous navigation system, allowing it to complete the half-marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, surpassing the previous world record of 57:20, held by Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo.

A big leap in progress from last year’s Beijing Half-Marathon

The same half-marathon comprising humans and their machine counterparts saw a different story last year, where humans effortlessly smoked the humanoid runners.

For context, the humanoid robots kept stumbling over last year, with those that made it to the finish line barely even coming close to the times acheived by their human counterparts.

To see a humanoid cross the finish line in good time this year is a pretty impressive feat, and breaking the world record on top of that? Almost unthinkable. It shows the immensely quick progress that’s been made in this space.

Even the number of humanoid entrants has increased, jumping from roughly 20 last year to more than 100 this year. Does this spell the end of human dominance in sport? Not exactly.

Firstly, these humanoid robots are expensive to build, and even more difficult to maintain and keep running. Secondly, they still require plenty of supervision during the races, which makes it impractical to have them running against humans on a regular basis.

But what does this mean for the future of humanoids? Well, it’s looking pretty bright for the time being… until they become sentient and take over the world.
