Kuala Lumpur Ranks Among Asia’s Top 10 Lunar New Year Destinations

Our very own Kuala Lumpur has secured a spot among the top 10 destinations in Asia for Lunar New Year celebrations, according to new data from digital travel platform Agoda!

As the festive season draws near, Agoda reports that Kuala Lumpur ranks seventh among the most searched destinations by international travellers celebrating Lunar New Year, while also emerging as the most searched domestic destination within Malaysia. The platform also notes that Bangkok, Thailand, is the top choice for Malaysians travelling overseas during the holiday period, based on accommodation search data.

Within Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, and Penang stand out as the most popular inbound destinations for international visitors.

This growing interest reflects travellers’ attraction to Malaysia’s rich cultural landscape paired with dynamic city life. Kuala Lumpur continues to draw crowds with its iconic skyline and diverse food scene that blends modern influences with tradition.

Johor Bahru appeals through its cultural sites and proximity to Singapore, while Penang remains a favourite for its heritage architecture and celebrated street food culture.

Together, these cities offer experiences that balance cultural discovery with urban exploration.

For domestic travel, Kuala Lumpur once again leads the way, followed by Penang and Melaka. Melaka’s historic landmarks and colonial-era charm continue to attract travellers keen on exploring Malaysia’s past, pointing to a broader trend of Malaysians choosing destinations that offer both cultural depth and varied experiences closer to home.

On the outbound front, Bangkok tops the list for Malaysian travellers, with Hat Yai and Tokyo following closely behind. Bangkok’s vibrant street culture and historic attractions make it a perennial favourite, while Hat Yai offers a more relaxed atmosphere centred on markets and local cuisine.

The upcoming Year of the Horse, often associated with vitality and adventure, is inspiring travellers to seek out energetic and engaging destinations.
