This Humanoid Robot Can Eerily Run Just Like a Human

Over the last two or three years, you might have seen videos of clunky humanoid robots (attempting to) run or interact with their human counterparts, and failing to do so in a human-like manner, like that one time when humanoids were pit against humans in a half-marathon and got absolutely smoked.

But the folks over at California-based robotics company Figure AI have just teased their own humanoid that can effortlessly keep pace with humans, without looking like it’s struggling for its non-sentient life.

You don’t even have to look closely to realise that this robot, which the company has dubbed “Figure 03”, looks almost natural in its running style. It moves with a really steady stride and confident balance that hasn’t been seen in other humanoids.

Add to that the fact that it’s a machine, which means it’ll outlast any human in terms of physical endurance. It’s pretty evident in the loud huffs and puffs you can hear coming from the dude recording the video, who seems to be having a hard time keeping up.

Jokes aside, Figure 03’s ability to run so naturally marks a meaningful leap forward for robotics. Running is hard, even for humans. It demands balance, timing, and constant adjustment to the ground beneath your feet.

For a humanoid robot to do it outdoors in an uncontrolled environment, as opposed to a lab under perfect conditions, suggests a truly high level of physical awareness. And this translates to real-world reliability, especially when it comes to fitness.

For instance, you could use something like Figure 03 as a training companion that sets the pace when you’re training for your next marathon. Or if you’re struggling, Figure 03 can act as an emotional support training buddy, nudging you to keep going when you feel like keeling over and giving up.

Beyond exercise and fitness, Figure 03 is actually part of the company’s latest platform designed to work at home. Think household chores like carrying heavy objects, navigating a cluttered kitchen, and even doing the laundry.

It all might seem completely unrelated to the humanoid’s ability to run, but these household tasks require the same thing: balance, coordination, and smooth movement.

According to Figure AI, the robot is being trained to do everyday tasks, like loading the dishwasher (though we Malaysians probably can’t relate), folding laundry, and serving food and drinks.

These are simple tasks that humans can do without stuttering. But for a robot to do the same things, it needs to understand the space around it, and Figure 03 seems to have all that figured out, considering that it can run smoothly without tripping over its own feet.

Figure AI hasn’t announced a release date for this humanoid yet. For now it’s still under development.
