Couple Marks Thirty Years Of Pure DIY Pop With COUPLE30

Three decades after they first plugged in at a time when Friendster was still a futuristic concept and guitar music dominated every bedroom in Malaysia, power pop heavyweights Couple are preparing to celebrate 30 years of unpolished brilliance with COUPLE30 on 6 December 2025 at Menara PT80 DBKL.
What began in 1995 as a scrappy four-piece with a profound DIY streak has grown into one of the most enduring forces in Malaysian independent music.
A band built by the people who listen to them
Couple’s story reads like a masterclass in how far stubbornness and community power can take a band. They never had the glossy privilege of heavy radio rotation. They relied on something far more democratic: real people.
The type who showed up at gigs, bought CDs straight from the band’s hands, and told their friends about this loud melodic group long before algorithms knew they existed.
Their second album Teenage Disc Fantastic sold 2,000 copies simply through gig culture and word of mouth. This was before streaming, before playlists, and before people carried the internet in their pockets. Their debut Top Of The Pop later travelled across borders and found homes in the US and Japan, proving that Malaysian power pop could fly without corporate wings.

A scene builder, not a scene stealer
What truly cements Couple as a Malaysian institution is the way they used their platform to pull younger bands into the light. Long before names like Hujan, Yuna, Tenderfist, and Pesawat were printed on festival lineups, they were opening for Couple, learning stagecraft, and soaking in the sense of camaraderie that defined the era.
This spirit lives on in their crowd favourite tribute projects. First came #TOTPcovers, which produced two volumes of younger artists reimagining their classics. Now comes #COUPLE30covers, which invites a new generation to put their fingerprints on the band’s legacy.
Three generations, one setlist, zero age limit
Couple’s appeal remains wonderfully intergenerational. At Tapaufest Asean in August 2025, the crowd looked like a family reunion curated by a music nerd: Gen X parents who once moshed to the band in clubs, older Millennials who grew up burning their songs onto blank CDs, and Gen Z kids who discovered them through TikTok edits but know every lyric anyway.
When songs like ‘Tentang Kita’, ‘Now That I Can See’, ‘Lagu Cinta Untukmu’, ‘Pergi’ and ‘Malam Minggu’ kick in, the entire crowd becomes a choir.

30 years of history on one stage in one night
Organised by their equally stubborn DIY comrades from Petai Belalang KL, COUPLE30 brings together every former member from the band’s three-decade timeline. Each musician will return to play the songs from the era they helped shape, from the lo fi demo years to the polished power pop albums that followed. It is the closest thing fans will get to a time machine.
Supporting the celebration are Empty Page. and The World Ends With You, two younger acts who represent the torchbearers Couple have always championed. With a planned 34-song setlist in mind, COUPLE30 is shaping up to be a full scale historical expedition through the Malaysian indie music scene.
Super Early Bird and Phase 1 tickets vanished almost immediately. Phase 2 tickets are still available at RM108 on pentasnasional.com until just a few hours before doors open. Door sales will go at RM128 for the last minute crowd.
