Atarayo Chase Fleeting Dreams on Their New Mini-LP ‘Utakata’

Japanese band Atarayo are no strangers to heartbreak. Known for weaving melancholy into melodies that feel both fragile and fierce, the quartet return with a new mini-album, Utakata 泡沫の夢は幻に.

It’s a shimmering collection that turns life’s fleeting moments into something worth holding on to.

Combining fan favourites and new tracks

The new mini-LP expands on fan favourites like ‘drop 雫’, ‘moon ship ツキノフネ’, and ‘I still love you 忘愛’, while also giving listeners some new sound that circles around the concept of dreams.

Not the kind of dreams that vanish when you wake up, but the ones that linger. Picture memories, regrets, and the hopes that shape who you are.

Opening track ‘Asanagi 朝凪’, which had an early release ahead of the album on 17 September, sets the tone with a more upbeat and electronic-tinged intro.

It’s a brighter, more experimental side of Atarayo, showing the band’s desire to evolve beyond their usual dream-rock melancholy.

Then comes ‘Yumeutsutsu natsukazekaoru 夢現、夏風薫る’, a cover of vocalist-guitarist Hitomi’s 2023 solo song, now reimagined with guitarist Marcy on lead vocals.

The result is a blend of nostalgia and contemplation, proving that the band aren’t afraid to play around with their identity.

“This album was created around the theme of dreams. It’s full of lyrics that could only be written because we stumbled and got hurt along the way,” Hitomi explains.

“I hope that everyone who listens to it feels they are not alone.”

And that’s exactly what makes Atarayo so magnetic. Their music doesn’t wallow in sadness: it feeds on it, turning heartbreak into catharsis. Even the band’s name, Atarayo, roughly translates to something along the lines of, “a night so beautiful it feels regretful to see it end.”

Atarayo’s latest work is bound to resonate with fans of Japanese rock, especially if you’re drawn to the emotional storytelling of bands like RADWIMPS, YOASOBI, or Ling Tosite Sigure. It’s music for the moments you can’t quite put into words.
