In Malaysia, getting a university degree has long been seen as the golden ticket to a stable career and a good life. From the moment we finish SPM or STPM, the common narrative is always study hard, get a degree, then find a solid job. But in 2025, is this still true?

The truth is, while a degree can open doors, it no longer guarantees you a job, especially a well-paying one. Malaysia’s job market has become more competitive, with more graduates each year competing for fewer traditional roles.

Many fresh grads find themselves stuck in contract jobs, or roles that don’t even require a degree. Some are even working in industries unrelated to their field of study.

Why does having a degree still matter, but is not enough?

Employers still value degrees as a baseline qualification. It shows you have discipline, basic skills, and a certain level of education, but increasingly, companies want more than just a certificate.

Companies are now looking for people who bring more to the table, not just paper qualifications. Good communication, being able to work well with others, adapting to challenges, and solving problems on the spot matter just as much.

On top of that, real-world experiences such as from internships, part-time jobs, or even freelance work can sometimes impress an employer more than a perfect CGPA.

The rise of skills-based hiring in Malaysia

More companies in Malaysia are moving towards skills-based hiring, especially in tech, digital marketing, creative industries, and now, AI-related roles.

On platforms like LinkedIn or local job portals, what often stands out isn’t just your degree, but your portfolio, certifications, and proof that you can actually do the job.

With AI changing the way we work, employers are more open to talent who’ve gained their skills through online courses, or even self-learning, as long as you can show good results.

What can students and graduates do?

Start small by doing volunteer work, freelance work, or part-time jobs to build experience. Along the way, you can hone your soft skills like communication, time management, and teamwork.

If you’re still job hunting after graduating, use the time to learn new skills through online certifications in graphic design, coding, video editing, or social media content creation to name a few. 

Also, don’t forget the power of networking. Attend events, reach out to alumni, and meet people in the industry.

At the end of the day, it’s not about showing off what you know, but staying humble and open to learning from others.

Message to parents and educators

A degree is just one piece of the puzzle. Parents and educators should also encourage young Malaysians to explore different career paths, learn vocational skills, and also consider entrepreneurship.

The old idea of “study hard, get a degree, land a comfy government job” just doesn’t work for everyone anymore.

Having a degree still matters because it opens doors and gives you a strong starting point. But in today’s Malaysia, it’s not a magic pass to success anymore.

The real game changer is how you combine your education with real-world skills, hands-on experience, and the guts to adapt when life throws you curveballs.

If you’re in uni now, think of your degree as your starting point, not your end goal. Remember, the grind after graduation is what will truly shape your future.

Because newsflash, your dream job won’t magically appear just because you’ve got a degree in hand.
