Langsuir Summons The Spirits At ‘Malam Mistik Melayu’ This Weekend

Langsuir is taking a break from the road… Not to rest, but to raise hell on home ground.

On 5 July, the long-running death metal unit will take over Sarang Bunyi Studio for a one-night showcase: Bumantara Vol. 15: Malam Mistik Melayu. This isn’t part of their current tour, and it’s not meant to be. It’s personal. It’s ceremonial.

More than three decades in, Langsuir is still finding new ways to shake things up. This showcase is their answer to the burnout of rinse-and-repeat gigs. Fewer bands. No rush. A tighter crowd. A chance to breathe, sweat, and channel something rawer.

Call it a ritual if you want, but the energy won’t lie.

They’ve curated the whole night themselves, from the lineup to the theme. Joining them are Ruh Arasy, who deliver symphonic deathcore laced with Nusantara esoterica, and fellow musical artist Tengku Hadhira, weaving goth folk melodies steeped in mystical Malay tradition. Together, they set the tone for an evening that’s less about spectacle and more about summoning.

Langsuir will also debut their new music video, ‘Iradat Kematian’, taken from their upcoming EP, still under the working title F. This marks their first official video release in almost 20 years—a long time coming, and a milestone in a career that’s never bowed to industry rules.

“The idea behind Malam Mistik Melayu was simple,” says Bentara, Langsuir’s guitarist and composer. “We’ve been doing the same format for 30 years. You show up, you play, you leave. There’s no room to really connect. A showcase lets us slow things down, interact, and actually build something with the crowd.”

Zoul of Sarang Bunyi Studio says the Bumantara series was built for this kind of energy: “We designed Bumantara to give bands a proper spotlight, not just another slot in a lineup. For Volume 15, it made sense to give Langsuir the reins. They’ve earned it. They shaped the concept, and the night reflects their legacy.”

And what a legacy it is.

Formed in 1991 in Ipoh under the names Langsuyr and Riusgnal, Langsuir is one of the earliest torchbearers of Malaysian death metal.

With their debut EP The Eastern Cruelty, they carved out a new direction for Eastern Metal, melding black and death metal with the folklore, mysticism, and shadow-world of the Nusantara region. Later releases like Asyik and Dirgha Belasungkawa deepened this mythology while pushing back on cultural stigma around extreme music. Their 2024 EP Engkar returned to mystical Malay themes with sharpened focus, and the upcoming F promises to carry that thread forward.
