Scientists (Sort of) Bring Dire Wolf Back From Extinction

12,500 years after they vanished from the face of the Earth, dire wolves are padding around again—alive, breathing, and howling.

And no, this isn’t some piece of HBO fan fiction (though it’d probably be pretty entertaining).

The feat, pulled off by Dallas-based biotech company, Colossal Biosciences, sounds like a sci-fi fever dream. It’s even crazier when you consider the fact that this specific species was brought back from a time when humans were still figuring out how to master farming.

Dire wolves are the larger, badder, furrier cousins of today’s grey wolves and the obvious inspiration behind the Game of Thrones house pets. Except this isn’t Westeros, it’s Texas. And instead of a castle, the first three pups are being raised on a secret, fenced-off 2,000-acre property under 24/7 drone surveillance.

Because apparently, if you resurrect an apex predator, you do need to prepare for some chaos. But don’t worry—this isn’t a Jurassic Park situation (yet).

Colossal’s team started with DNA pulled from dire wolf fossils (one tooth, one skull) and compared it with the closest living relative, the grey wolf.

Turns out, the two species share 99.5% of their DNA, so scientists just had to tweak a few specific genes—the ones responsible for things like thicker fur and those famously strong jaws—to start shaping a dire wolf 2.0.

Using CRISPR gene-editing tech (the same stuff scientists use to cure diseases or make glow-in-the-dark fish), they modified grey wolf cells, cloned them, and implanted the embryos into large domestic dogs who acted as surrogates.

The result? Three very real, very alive dire wolf pups: Two males born in October 2024, and one female born in January 2025.

They’re not quite identical to their ancient ancestors—think of them more as a remix than a re-release. But to the untrained eye? They look like dire wolves. And they act like them too—aloof, cautious, and still figuring out how to be apex predators in the 21st century.

According to Colossal, this is about more than just showing off futuristic tech. They’re pitching de-extinction as a tool for conservation—a way to learn more about cloning, gene editing, and how to help endangered species today.

Still, there’s a fair bit of debate over whether this is the best use of hundreds of millions in funding—they’ve raised over $435 million (RM1.9 billion) so far. Critics argue the money could go toward saving species we still have, rather than playing god with the ones we’ve already lost.

And there are ethical questions too: What happens to the animals used in the process? Where would these recreated species live in the wild, if they were ever released? Can a lab-grown dire wolf really fit back into a modern ecosystem that’s moved on without it?

Right now, Colossal seems to be approaching this with a decent level of caution.

Their wolf pups are under careful observation, not intended for immediate release, and housed in a massive, certified facility that’s basically a private zoo-meets-wildlife lab.

But let’s be honest: Whenever science starts reviving extinct carnivores with prehistoric DNA, it’s hard not to think about chaos theory and Jeff Goldblum’s raised eyebrows.

Unlike Jurassic Park, though, there are no velociraptors here—just some fluffy wolves with great bone structure and a mysterious future.
