It’s the moment everyone’s dreaded for years—the big wigs at Spotify are considering an additional US$5.99 (~RM26) charge on top of existing premium subscriptions.

In return, users will reportedly get to enjoy a variety of features in what one might classify as a super-premium tier.

According to Bloomberg, Spotify is hoping to launch its new Music Pro tier later this year, and it’s tailored specifically for super-fans. These are people who you might consider to be the most dedicated fans of musicians; the ones who spend regularly on merchandise and concert tickets.

The cost will vary depending on geographical location, with lesser-developed regions enjoying lower costs. But this also begs the question: What’s so special about Music Pro in the first place?

It’ll reportedly offer higher-quality audio streaming, a selection of remixing tools, as well as access to concert tickets, according to people familiar with the matter. While remixing songs might not be useful to the casual listener, we can definitely see the appeal of using Spotify as a base for ticket sales.

Regarding the other proposed new features, however, there’s stiff competition from the likes of Apple Music and Tidal, whose existing subscription plans already offer higher-quality audio than Spotify.

In terms of pricing and a specific launch date, there’s no information yet. But we can expect to see the new tier roll out this year, with its proposed features coming to users in stages.
