Cultural Appropriation Backfires When Amazon Markets Chinese Chamberpots As Antique Fruit Baskets

In my opinion, the top two most wonderful feelings in the world are: When a kitten falls asleep on your chest while you’re tucked into bed and when people try to culturally appropriate something, but it backfires horribly on them.

Thankfully, the latter occurred on U.S e-commerce platform, Amazon, when a user listed a Chinese chamberpot as a “1960s Chinese Traditional Fruit Basket”.

For those of you who are unaware, before the invention of toilets that can flush, every Chinese household had chamberpots so the residents could go number 1 or number 2. The contents of the pots would be dumped (no pun intended) into workers’ carts every morning and taken away to landfills.

Now, fast forward to the year 2021, chamberpots are making a comeback, but for all the wrong reasons.

It’s either the person who listed the item as an “antique kitchen & dining table decoration” is an elite-tier troll or just blissfully ignorant.

They even included pictures of how you can make full use of this “retro basket”. After seeing these photos, the user has to be taking the piss…

Priced at $31.99 (approximately RM130), these pots aren’t cheap, which could spark the idea in someone’s head to purchase it as a present for their Chinese friends to prove that, “Hey, I’m cultured!”

Well, let’s hope nobody accidentally gifted these for Chinese New Year or sh!t would definitely hit the fan.
