Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Merdeka and Malaysia Day celebrations have been unusually quiet. However, the students at The Integrated Islamic School in Shah Alam definitely made up for the lack of festivities with their own joyous celebration of Malaysia Day by cosplaying as front-liners.

Sarah Shafeera Mohd Hassan, a 27-year-old English teacher at the school, told JUICE that the idea for the cosplay came from one of the Bahasa Malaysia teachers who was in charge of the Malaysia Day celebration. The whole idea was to pay homage to the front-liners who have poured their blood, sweat and tears to keep our nation safe.
When asked about the children’s costumes and how they acquired it, Sarah stated that the kids’ costumes were prepared by their parents who were very supportive of their school event.
Take a look at some of the children who dressed up as food delivery drivers, policemen and firemen.
Apart from the front-liner cosplay, the school also had a best-decorated class competition and the best Malaysia Day-themed dishes.
“I felt really excited seeing the school filled with tiny little doctors, little abang Grab drivers and of course, tiny teachers. Many teachers joked that our school was the safest because if anything happened, we had tiny doctors, soldiers, policemen, firemen and food delivery drivers walking around the school,” said Sarah.
Speaking to JUICE, she also said that this has been a nice change of scenery, especially for the teachers because handling kids during a pandemic was taking a toll on their mental health. To have a day where everyone could come together and celebrate being a Malaysian was a breath of fresh air.
It’s clear enough to see that this must have been a great day for everyone, uniting together not just as teachers and students but as Malaysians.
We hope their next Malaysia Day celebration will be just as much fun!
