Did You Know Malaysia’s Men’s Dodgeball Team is Ranked #2 in the World?!
Apparently, Malaysians are good at dodging more than just campaign promises, ’cause the Malaysian Dodgeball Federation Men’s Team recently took home the silver medal at the recent Dodgeball World Cup in Madison Square Garden, New York.
The tournament which took place in early August saw our Men’s Team defend their ranking as the World’s #2 dodgeball team. They beat out England, the previous Dodgeball World Cup Champion but lost to Austria over less than 4 points! Such a close call, however, both the Women’s Team and Mixed Team progressed to clinch their ranks as World Number 5 in their respective divisions.
If your impression of dodgeball is dictated by those scenes in American movies–where it usually a nerds vs jocks showdown–let us fill you in on the reality of the game…
Thanks to our friends at Wiki, we now understand and appreciate the sport a bit more. If you haven’t looked it up yet, Dodgeball refers to a collection of team sports in which players on two teams try to throw balls at each other while avoiding being hit themselves.
Seems simple huh? Nope, you need the right amount of stamina, strength, precision, speed, and many other skills before you can even consider playing this sport professionally. Just look at how hard the Malaysian teams were training in the pic below:
There are many variations of the game, but generally the main objective of each team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them with thrown balls, catching a ball thrown by a member of the opposing team, or forcing them to move outside the court boundaries when a ball is thrown at them.
