Yes, You Still Need to Pay for Tolls
As reported by The Sun, tolls nationwide will not be abolished in the near future because the government does not have the financial means to absorb its impact. It would cost the government RM400 billion to abolish the tolls in one go, says Works Minister Baru Bian.
Until the country’s financial situation improves, the Pakatan Harapan government have decided to put on hold indefinitely any such plans.
“After taking into account this factor (of having to fork out RM400 billion), the government has agreed to postpone the proposal to abolish tolls until our economy really stabilises and allows for it. The government will, however, study other options that we may deem to be more practical in order to reduce the cost of living for the rakyat,” he told Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Pakatan Harapan’s GE14 manifesto stated that coalition pledged to abolish the collection of tolls and Goods and Services Tax (GST). While the GST has been abolished with the introduction of the incoming Sales Tax (SST), the rakyat will have to wait for Malaysia to become a toll-free nation.
