The much-anticipated nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were revealed yesterday, highlighting significant recognition for Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Wicked.

The event began with Academy leaders addressing the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, followed by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott announcing the nominees, setting the stage for the March awards ceremony.

Let’s get into it:

Top Nominees

Leading the pack is the musical Emilia Pérez with 13 nominations, followed by The Brutalist and Wicked, each earning 10 nods.

Emilia Pérez

Despite facing controversy, Emilia Pérez emerged as a dominant force, including its four Golden Globe wins. Criticisms were directed at Selena Gomez’s portrayal of her character’s Spanish dialogue and the film’s representation of the transgender community. Nevertheless, it surpassed previous non-English language milestones set by the likes of Roma and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The Brutalist

Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist tells the story of Hungarian refugees, played by Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, as they navigate life in post-WWII America. Though the film also garnered controversy over the use of AI in dialect creation, Corbet strongly defended his team’s efforts. The film performed well during the Golden Globes and remains a key contender.

Wicked

Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster musical adaptation of Wicked received significant recognition, including a Best Picture nomination. Stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande both earned acting nominations, with Grande being a first-time nominee. If Erivo wins, she will achieve EGOT status, joining an elite group of fewer than 30 individuals who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. This marks the first time since 1968 that two musicals (Wicked and Emilia Pérez) are vying for Best Picture!

Notable Acting Nominations

This year saw an influx of first-time acting nominees, with 13 individuals receiving their inaugural nods. Notable names include Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Isabella Rossellini, and Zoe Saldaña.

Ceremony Details

Conan O’Brien will host the awards on 2 March, airing on ABC.
