Goth is like good wine. The longer it lingers, the better it gets. And Zola Jesus (Nika Roza Danilova) has pretty much proven so, with her appearance in the scene and the impact she has brought with her (black drapes and dark mascara in tow).
Raised in rural Wisconsin, Zola took opera lessons as a child, an interesting move that not only adds to her hipster cred, but lays good base to bring her Bauhaus and Siouxsie Sioux inspirations into the studio and onstage-writing and producing her own experimental and gothic rock sounds and turning it into a serious music-making exercise in the last four years. Love, loss and longing, those are the key themes of her latest album offering Stridulum II. Gloom never sounded so sexy.
