Probably the only band from Cyberjaya we care for, DIY dreampop outfit Youth Portal is adept at crafting what they’d call “intuitive music.” Repetitions, simple riffs, and seemingly innocent lyrics make for memorable loops in all of their songs, a songwriting representation of the band’s leitmotif of a collective fear of growing up. Latest single ‘Butter Breakfast’ may be the best demonstration of that fact, with vocalist Tobu bemoaning that “morning ain’t forever” before expressing his desire for a better (or butter) breakfast forever — with the added bitterness of coffee, of course. And in case you forget and need another reason to give this a listen, DIIV approved of Youth Portal.
