White Lies : To Lose A Life (Geffen)

White Lies’ gloomy debut is full of ghoulish stories of undead lovers, haunted funfairs and kidnappings gone murderously wrong. Not good for any emo kid, as their theme is committing suicide and parents dictating in their wills that they be stuffed and mounted in their daughter’s front room.

Pretty freaky, if you think of it. With gore-spattered lines such as “I’ll leave my memoirs in blood on the floor”, White Lies gives new meaning to the word “depression”. If Judgment Day comes tonight, then these nu wave emo rockers will be laughing at the end of the world. Dark music has never sounded so luminous.
