What Went Down: Heineken Thirst 2013 @ Sepang International Circuit
Star Arena
Kicking the night off at Star Arena was our favourite alpha-hipster/foodie/sneaker head/DJ Bunga who started the night and slowly drew the crowd into the smaller stage. Part of Twilight Actiongirl (TAG), Bunga begun the night with indie tunes. Energy begun to show as people started to jump and dance as next up was another local and also of TAG, DJ Xu. Together with his notable Friday night Barsonic indie touch and the trippy visual backdrop, early-goers started to show us that they came here to party.
After Xu, the madness started to escalate when Madeon took over. The crowd went crazy even as he dropped his first song. People started to jump nonstop (you could literally feel the earth shaking) flailing their arms around and girls whirling their annoying long hair left and right. Switching between some hip hop to rock mixes with his upbeat touch, the young French DJ showed no signs of letting down as he continued to drop some own his own songs such as ‘Finale’ which drove everyone nuts.
Next up was the British boys, DJ Wire and Example. The duo continued the momentum of the party with Example continuously pumping them up, ushering everyone to jump, go crazy and whatnot. DJ Wire mixed a variety of songs from Blur to Vampire Weekend to Underworld keeping the crowd guessing and continuously wanting for more. By then the stage was already packing up with people.
Come 10.30pm, you could already go deaf with the amount of screaming and wailing from guys and girls when R3hab came up on the stage. The proponent of a darker version of Dirty Dutch, R3hab whipped the crowd into frenzy. You would think that by now, after more than 4 hours of hand raising, screaming and jumping, you would be utterly spent but we were surprised that there was no sign of the crowd tiring out, just more and more showing up (at this point, you’d even forgot there was another stage back there). Although no one took the liberty of heeding the call to apply deodorant before coming to the festival, the occasional spurt of icy cold mist was most welcomed and served as a recharge button for everyone. Beautiful duo Nervo showed up and joined forces with R3hab in the middle of the set which pleasantly surprised the crowd, especially the guys. After another 30 minutes of continuously hard electro pumping music, the three of them got out a Malaysian flag and proclaimed their love for Malaysia (Malaysia Boleh indeed).
As the final act of the night and basically the highlight of the Star Arena, W&W, came up, the crowd probably numbered to the thousands with the stage’s left, right, centre, and back being flooded. The odd mixture of hipsters and normal people almost seemed awkward if not for the electrically mind-pumping insane good music. The finale was a go and the crowd gave it all they could, jumping so high you’d think they would reach the sky. From afar, the crowd resembled a mosh-pit and if you were inside the crowd, it was not much different. Either you’d come out with bruises, kisses, fluids not from your own body’s origin and/or bite marks.
