Joy belonged to Quek Shio Chuan last Thursday at the unveiling of the BMW Shorties 2011 winner. Guang, Quek’s film was awarded Best Film for the fifth edition of the BMW Shorties. The inspiring 14 minute short film based on Quek’s autistic brother was awarded a production grant of RM 75,000. An exclusive Sony Handycam NEX-VG20E system worth RM 15,000 was also awarded by Sony Malaysia to the 25 year old Line Producer and his team.
The panel of judges for this year’s Shorties comprised of award-winning independent filmmaker Khairil M Bahar, renowned veteran film and stage actress Datin Sofea Jane Hashim, Malaysia’s multi-talented thespian Gavin Yap and experienced TV commercial producer Lina Tan. All judges came together for the deliberation process and the final decision was agreed upon by all.
Out of 114 entries submitted this year, the highest number of entries since the inception of the competition, Guang was also granted the Best Screenplay Award, besides garnering nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design and Best Editing. Local actor, Chen Chong Wei who played the lead role as Wen Guang, the autistic boy with attention deficiency disorder won the Best Actor award. Guang pretty much swept the awards away, including a special award for Best Sound Design award.
Hosted by the ever entertaining duo Umapagan Ampikaipakan and Ezra Zaid, BFM’s regular voices, the crowd was left in stitches. Local acts Cats in Love and Kyoto Protocol were also present to rock the crowd during intervals.
