We Don’t Envy You No More

To explain what it feels like to see a band that you adore make it to Malaysia isn’t easy. The Top 40 crowd get their middle-of-the-road innocuous pop fix fulfilled with groups like Michael Learns To Rock, Black Eyed Peas, Backstreet Boys and even David Archuletta. So when I heard Envy was on their way, my initial reaction was that it must only be a rumour. Rejoice music fans! It is in fact not.

I won’t deny, the past 2 years have been musically better than most. Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, Mono and math rock band Battles have all lit of local stages. Now add to that impressive list Japan’s well known hardcore/screamo band, Envy, who will perform at Bentley Music Auditorium (Near Ikea, The Curve) this Saturday 11 July 2009.

Envy has gained an ear-bleeding reputation for their mastery of screamo’s loud-soft dynamic to evoke both crushing brutality and gentle beauty and their music has evolved, over the years, to incorporate hardcore, screamo, and most recently, the post rock sound.

The band is also noted for their deep and poetic lyrics, and has become increasingly popular among the post rock scene crowd in the last few years for Envy’s use of that Mogwai-esque sound and composition dynamics in traditional screamo song. Check out the YouTube clip below as a preview to what you will be seeing this Saturday.

Envy Live in KL will be held 8pm on July 11 at Bentley Music Auditorium (Near Ikea, The Curve). Tickets are priced at RM98 and RM108 at the door. Tickets can also be purchased at Rock Corner outlets and [email protected]. For more info, log on to www.myspace.com/officialenvy.
