Vogue Italia x Black Barbie
In 2008 Vogue Italia (that’s Italy in case you don’t read Italian) made headlines with their Black issue, dedicated to women of African origin and featuring only black models, like Liya Kebede. This year, Editor-In-Chief Franca Sozzani raises the bar yet again by commemorating Black Barbie.
The issue takes on a special significance and not just because it’s Barbie’s 50th anniversary this year, but because this year, Barbie will get a racial makeover with Afro-centric features like curlier hair, a wider nose and fuller lips, demonstrating how far the world has come in terms of racial awareness.
The July issue of Vogue is available at retailers and online. For magazine collectors like me, this is a definite keeper.
