Having an identity crisis is a common subject, but with ‘Your Best American Girl’, Mitski writes about her experience of otherness as a Japanese-American girl who has a crush on an American man who prefers the standard all-American girl. The lyrics are incredibly lonesome, “I’m not the moon, I’m not even a star/ But I wake at night to sing a song to the love birds.” Thankfully, the guitars burst forth in a thunderous fervour to counteract the pining, self-pity for a dumb white boy. But the most important message that one should attain from the video is that loving yourself first and foremost is far more imperative than succumbing to the white ideal.
