VIDEO: Kris Wu Finally Drops the Visuals for ‘Deserve (feat. Travis Scott)’
Earlier this month, Kris Wu released a teaser of an upcoming “epic collaboration” with Travis Scott in the form of a single called ‘Deserve’. Upon its release on 11 October, the track has garnered over four million plays on Spotify and even shot up to first place on the U.S. iTunes chart – an incredible feat considering this is Wu’s first English-language single. Capped at slightly over three minutes, the song is exactly what you’d expect to get if Travis Scott is featured, but with Wu’s sensual vocals and mellow rap, the banger becomes somewhat harmonious in sound, largely credited to the two artistes’ work chemistry as mentioned by Wu himself in an interview with Beats 1.
“I think it’s so important that you want to be in the room with these people making music together, because that’s what it’s all about. Especially hip hop music, because you have to be vibing.”
For the Canadian-Chinese star, work comes in all forms and is never limited to just music. Prior to this collaboration, Wu was a part of K-pop mega boy band EXO, and can be seen walking on the runway for Burberry. As an actor, Wu made his Hollywood debut with xXx: Return of Xander Cage and although there seems to be a lot of first-times for the growing artiste, there is only one way up from now, especially after the release of ‘Deserve’.
The visual companion piece consists of mostly Wu and Scott on top of a monster truck. There are also various clips of women (is that Kylie Jenner at the 2:20 mark?), and the pair posing around dimly-lit spaces, occasionally in fire or neon-laden settings. The last few seconds shows Wu sitting on a throne, as if to claim the title of the first Chinese recording artiste to receive huge crossover success within the month of its single release.
