Singer Kelela has a forthcoming EP, Hallucinogen, and one of the tracks of the said release is Arca-produced (see also FKA twigs and Bjork), with even additional tinkering from Boots, who’s had a hand in the making of Beyonce’s self-titled surprise album. Unsurprisingly more in tune with the soundscape explored on FKA twigs’ LP1 than Kelela’s own Fade to Mind-released mixtape Cut 4 Me, ‘A Message’ illustrates her torment in love — in the pained pull of her falsetto and in the resonant punctuation of pauses, as a single ball of light finds her body in pitch dark. The visuals of the video heighten the emotional elements of the message where Kelela lops off her dreads and proceeds to morph into an anime nymph creature resembling her real self.
