In a series of self-directed music videos for her songs off her pop opus Art Angels, Claire Boucher first killed ‘Grimes’ in ‘Flesh Without Blood/ Life in the Vivid Dream’, then she held an underground rave in an abandoned subway for ‘Kill V. Maim’, and now, yet again, she’s channelling a few characters in the video for ‘California’. Just as suggested from the country-esque pop sound of the song, we see Grimes as a rhinestone cowgirl serenading the blues, doing light acrobatic gymnastics in a Mondriaan of a gymnasium, and Grimes as an art student (are we assuming too much from her beret?) in a room full of statues, just as she sings, “When you get bored of me, I’ll be back on the shelf.” Also, if you look closely, you can see Megan James of Purity Ring and singer/musician HANA starring alongside Grimes.
