TRAILER: Malaysian Horror Film ‘Miimaland’ Wins Two Awards At Toronto’s Alternative Film Festival

Yesterday, Malaysian horror film Miimaland brought home two awards at the AltFF Alternative Film Festival in Toronto, Canada in the Best Horror Film and Best Director category.

The film’s director Nevin Hiong, 50, said they were just trying their luck by submitting this work to several foreign film festivals but didn’t expect any success.

“Previously, this film received criticisms from film critics on YouTube. So, we are proud of this victory because it is important for the team and at the same time this success will be our benchmark on future films,” he told Bernama.

The film is about a group of content creators who received a job offer to film at the long-abandoned theme park, Mimaland, which was popular in the ’80s.

As haunted houses go, the group’s adventure turns into a bad dream after various happenings occur one by one and members of their group end up dead after unknowingly invoking mystical spirits there.

Hiong, who’s been in the industry for more than 10 years started as a cinematographer in local movies like Cerita Kita, Nasi Kangkang and Highland Tower before his directorial debut in 2016’s Kampung Drift.

“Each of these experiences were important steps in my body of work. They had a rhythm and were interconnected with each other, he added.

The 50-year-old director added that Miimaland also had nominations in several international film festivals such as the Portland Horror Film Festival, Brussels Independent Film Festival and Europe Film Festival.

Produced by Mico Studio (M) Sdn Bhd, Miimaland was released in local cinemas on 24 September 2020 and stars Fattah Amin, Sophia Albarakbah, Zandra Ridhuwan, and Camelia Natasya, among others.
