Boutique and theme hotels are all the rage now, what not with the increasing demand for affordable accommodation in tourist hotspots. Unfortunately, not a lot utilise their location to its full creative potential. Enter Time Capsule Hotel – located in Penang’s historical Chulia Street, it’s almost literally as its name says; upon exiting your capsule after a good night’s sleep, you’re transported to old Malaya.
Each capsule is made to look like a space pod straight from a sci-fi flick, but of course, you won’t be in a 100-year-long stasis while staying here. So, basic hotel amenities like built-in safe, WiFi, charging point, TV, and adjustable air-conditioner are all fitted into the compact rectangular space for your convenience. If human contact is what you desire, they’ve also recently installed couple capsules. Storage compartment is separated from the capsules as each guest will be given a personal locker to keep their personal belongings.
You’d think a capsule hotel is for those who prefer solitude – not so much here. There are multiple social areas in Time Capsule Hotel; aside from the expected lounge and café, its fourth floor – the Comfort Zone – is equipped with foosball, pool table, and two desktop computers for general use. Its reception area also has a coffee bar, and if caffeine isn’t a conversation stimulus for you, its outdoor sitting area is just next to a vape shop, VapeFace. Though the ultimate social area has got to be the shared toilet… jokes! The toilets are of course separated by gender with each having two bathrooms.
Time Capsule Hotel is the perfect novelty in an industry that prefers to appeal to the upmarket crowd. It’s the middleground for travellers who want to experience something that isn’t quite a backpacker hostel, yet not a boring 3- to 4-star hotel either.
Rooms are priced from RM65 to RM100 a night.
