You might ask why Sawdust is released so close to the release of the rather lackluster Sam’s Town. Completists however won’t and instead will invest in this rag bag of off-cuts. ‘All the Pretty Faces’ suggests that Sam’s Town could have been a brilliant hi-NRG sequel to Hot Fuss if Brandon Flowers hadn’t decided to become the new Springsteen. Tellingly, it’s the Hot Fuss era session tracks that make the most impact; the Jacques Lu Cont remix of ‘Mr Brightside’ is the best thing here by a mile.
