VIDEO: Watch a Cringe-Inducing Preview of The Great Phatsby – The Simpsons’ Hip Hop Episode Starring RZA, Common, and Snoop Dogg
Because The Simpsons is still in a ‘90s timewarp – its continuing existence is a testament to that – the forthcoming episode of the series not only features the anachronistic slang ‘phat’, but also three of the genre’s elder statesmen; RZA, Common, and Snoop Dogg. While the Queen herself, Cookie Lyon, and Social Justice Dave Chappelle, Keegan-Michael Key, will be voicing the episode as well to provide some timely relevance to the aging show, the whole trope of parodying hip hop by having white characters adopt it reeks of ‘90s otherism. Especially when the genre is already chock-full of white people by now.
