The Dead Weather: Sea Of Cowards (Warner)
With the bar raised after their victorious debut Hellhound, Jack White’s Alison “The Kills” Mosshart, Queen of the Stone Age’s Dean Fertita and Jack Lawrence of White’s own The Raconteurs add some blackness to their swampy metal blues. At first the thought of a funky White might be amusing. But if Elvis failed, then Jack shouldn’t even try.
Sea Of Cowards starts of strong with ‘Blue Blood Blues’, but doesn’t progress far from that despite the usually kickass Alison sharing vocal duties with (drummer-in-this-band) Jack. The sludge fest of spit, goth and Zeppelin droning over stoned-out funk grooves do make for a nice day in bed though. Bong on the side, of course.
