You want spontaneity? The Blackboard Restaurant and Bar has no lengthy menus with pretty pictures in them. Instead, it has a small blackboard hanging above the couch in the lounge area that tells you the day’s specials. “There is no set menu here. We don’t have specialties or signature dishes. What you see on the blackboard is what you get,” The Blackboard chef and restaurateur Michel Gabriel Cottabarren said.

Nestled comfortably in a corner of Desa Sri Hartamas (a couple of lots away from Finnegan’s), JUICE was invited to Blackboard’s launch party. Keeping with the restaurants spontaneity, we were greeted at the door by models in body paint. After exchanging hellos with the human zebras (they were painted black and white for simplicity), we were entertained by acoustic performances from 80s retro-pop Benchmarx, blues-rock kakis The Rollin’ Sixers and Global Battle of the Bands Malaysian winner, Lab Rat. The bands played originals as well as covers near the bar area and had the thirsty crowd singing along throughout the night.

Apart from receiving a Blacklist card – the restaurant’s A-Listers’ Card with dining discounts and other benefits – chef Cottabarren prepared a feast of tasters including slow braised oxtail and shitake tortellini with tomato and cremini mushroom ragu, and chilled dark chocolate and orange timbale with tossed raspberries in balsamic syrup.

Although the French chef is a master of cuisines and can prepare anything from Italian to Mediterranean to Asian and fusion, The Blackboard keeps it simple and unpredictable. Now go get some.
