The Best of 2011
DJ Xu of LapSap and Twilight Actiongirl doesn’t need much introduction anymore. He’s the perennial favourite of pretty much every clubber in KL. So we’re going to take this opportunity to pimp out his new group with Jit Woei – Mini Compo – a clever pastiche of electro-tinged 80s pop. Check them out here.
Dash Berlin visited KL twice in a row in a single year due to the immense demand by fans, it doesn’t surprise us the slightest when he received the highest votes for Best Visiting DJ.
The whitest boy alive is also the most popular one, beating The Used whom we thought would end up winning this category. Their concert might be smaller in scale, but you know a night is going to be well-spent when the frontman declares “put down your cameras, this is not a presentation or a commercial, this is a party!”
Having organised Rockaway, the most talked about event of the year, and soon bringing down Pete Tong this coming New Year ’s Eve, 2011 definitely belongs to Livescape Asia.
JUICE Mentions:
Monsoon+ – These guys are expected to be the underdogs of this category, while their events are smaller in scale, the niche acts they bring resonate with JUICE’s personal taste.
FSA – Future Sound Asia has been around the longest, it’d be crime to let them go unmentioned.
Despite their assisted suicide-wishing name, They Will Kill Us All can’t be killed. Having gone through a number of different line-ups with multiple vocalists, the band refuses to be bogged down every time a singer leaves. In their current form, TWKUA is at their best as leader and creative auteur behind the band, Edwin Raj, finally takes centre stage as the vocalist, giving the band a much needed grounded creative control. Singles ‘The Great Glass City’ and ‘Under the Red Sky’ have propelled the band’s profile to wider popularity, as proven by their win here.
While the rest of our nominees for this category were only new in the sense that they just recently blew up, Kuantan’s The Impatient Sisters are a genuine new find. Much like Zee Avi, they were discovered on YouTube before quickly rising to internet prominence. It’s their live performance for The Wknd Sessions that sealed the deal for us though, these Eisley-influenced sisters are destined for indie greatness.
